TWISTED SOBRIETY
A sculpture exhibition by Paul Juillerat MA MRSS
22 July – 6 August 10am – 4pm
Round Tower Gallery, Black Swan Arts

I make undeniably thought-provoking work that has always initiated conversations with its audience. I want people to feel as comfortable with sculpture as most do with painting, and I try very hard to do this by making it attractive, dynamic and engaging.

I spent many years making large-scale public art, but since 2008 I have reduced the scale of my work and I like to show locally when I can.  I have spent the last 2 years or so since ‘Lock Down’ making a body of work that has flowed from me since that release and has a freedom borne of events prior to that time.

I have a passionate love for brightly coloured, vivid abstract painting and a desire to create work that connects with the space it is standing in.  Naturally sculpture fulfils some of that desire and I have always been drawn to painters who use colour intensely; as a sculptor I have this desire to draw my experiences of these paintings into my work.  Artists like Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, Frank Stella and many others have influenced the shape and colour of my work; sculpture definitely, paintings in space perhaps.

The underlying narrative is the human experience, every piece an expression of emotion – intensely personal and yet universally appealing to the broadest audience.

I make sculptures from a wide range of materials with particular expertise in wood and metal. My work ranges from large-scale public commissions to galleried exhibitions. Recent works are made from assembled hard woods, cut and reassembled into their final form and selectively painted to create stunning imagery. I select the materials I use in response to my desire to inform and create each piece, choosing materials carefully to give the work its individual narrative.

I live and work in Bath, since 1990 I have been a self-employed Artist/Designer. I have also taught at a number of Art Schools including Winchester School of Art and have been an arts consultant and lead artist on projects for companies ranging from The Conran Shop, St Modwen Developments Ltd amongst many others. I exhibit widely and have work in collections worldwide as well as a number of large and small commissions in the UK. I studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art; I have an MA from Chelsea College of Art & Design and in 2004 I was elected a member to the Royal Society of Sculptors MRSS.
